NFL player Cole Beasley: “It’s all about the young players who don’t have a voice” – NFL Covid protocol

The NFL has made waves recently with their changes to their Covid protocols that go out of their way to punish any player who has chosen to not vaccinate. Cole Beasley, a 9-year veteran wide receiver of the NFL recently spoke about his decision to not get vaccinated to reporters. Mr. Beasley told reporters that “out of respect” for his teammates and coaches he “wanted to kind of put something together” so he could explain his position and “get it out of the way”.

“I want to start this off by saying I’m not anti or pro-vax I’m pro-choice” Beasley began. “With that being said the issue at hand is Information is being withheld from players in order for a player to be swayed in a direction he may not be comfortable with. When dealing with a player’s health and safety there should be complete transparency regarding information that is vital in the decision-making process. Without having all the proper information a player can feel misguided and unsure about a very personal choice. It makes a player feel unprotected and gives concerns about future topics regarding health and our ability to make educated decisions.

It isn’t lost on the Buffalo Bills receiver that many people think he is being “selfish” for his decision to not get a Covid vaccine. He told reporters that “Some people may think that I am being selfish and making this a me thing – it’s all about the young players who don’t have a voice and are reaching out to me every day because they’re being told if they don’t get vaxxed they’ll be cut. Agents are being told by teams that if they have unvaccinated guys they will not be given opportunities as of now to be seen in workouts.”

The Buffalo Bills wide receiver then drove home the point of unvaxxed players “losing a dream they have worked their whole lives” for. “So once unvaxxed players get cut they are losing a dream they have worked their whole lives – over a vaccine that has proven to not keep people from contacting Covid as we’ve seen.

“It’s all about the young players who don’t have a voice and are reaching out to me everyday because they’re being told if they don’t get vaxxed they’ll be cut. Agents are being told by teams if they have unvaccinated guys they will not be given opportunities as of now to be seen in workouts.”

Mr. Beasley also pointed out that the NFL Covid protocols in the 2020 season had been “very successful.” “For so many players around the NFL safety does not solely mean avoiding the Covid virus. Our health is the now and years beyond which we are trying to protect with our personal choice while doing all the things we did in our protocol during a very successful 2020 season.”

Beasley also pointed out that doctors keep saying “from what we know now” and that doesn’t quite sit well with the Bills wideout. “Every doctor I’ve gone to with questions begins every sentence with “from what we know now” which tells me we don’t know enough.”

Different treatment in the NFL depending on Vax status

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL network, unvaccinated players must wear a mask at all times. This includes while lifting weights in the weight room, at walkthroughs and at practice except when doing so would interfere with their ability to engage in athletic activity. Unvaxxed players also have restrictions placed on them while they’re outside of the team’s facilities. They aren’t allowed to attend clubs, bars, sporting events, concerts and will be subject to a $14,650 fine for their first offence if found in violation of the NFL’s policy.
